Roli Gasca, a fighter of the famed ALA Promotions has won the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super bantamweight title with a majority twelve round decision in what was described as a thrilling bout against Japanese champion Hiromasa Ohashi at the Aioi Hall in Kariya, Aichi, Japan.
A report to the Daily Inquirer said that Gasca, a skilled boxer rather than a big puncher started off quickly, landing combinations to the head of Ohashi and was leading on the scorecards if two of the three judges at the end of four rounds.
Ohashi bullied his way forward and connected with some solid body shots that forced Gasca to slip into a defensive mode.
The 22 year old Filipino began to out-box his opponent in the middle rounds and began to connect with his overhand right and a few good uppercuts. After the 9th round the Japanese fight fans tried to will their fighter to get back at Gasca, but the shifty Filipino answered with combinations to the body and switched to the head making Ohashi?s face look totally battered.
Gasca sealed the win by dominating the Japanese champion the whole of the 12th round frustrating him as well as the pro-Japanese crowd.
Gasca?s performance was enough to convince judge Masakazu Murase of Japan and Noli Flores of the Philippines who turned in identical 116-112 scorecards although Korean referee/judge Kwang Ki Kim had it even at 115-115.
With the win Gasca improved his record to 17-1 with 3 knockouts while Ohashi who is 31 years old dropped to 24-10-3 with 15 knockouts.
Gasca was coming off a 3rd round TKO in a Pinoy Pride fight card in Bacolod City last April 9. He had earlier won the Pan Asian Boxing Association bantamweight title with a 6th round TKO of Thailand?s Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat on November 12, 2010 in Thailand.
Ohashi won the vacant OPBF title with a twelve round split decision over Jhunriel Ramonal last March 27.
He had earlier won the title with a 7th round knockout over another Filipino, Rolly Lunas (Matsushita) who recently regained the OPBF bantamweight title but lost it to world-rated Akifumi Shimoda by a unanimous twelve round decision on March 28, 2010.
