Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation official Koji Ishizuka reports that Rolly Lunas (Matsushita) regained the bantamweight title in a one-sided bout that ended in an 8th round knockout of fellow Filipino Zerofit Jerope Mercado (Zuiyama) last weekend.
Ishizuka said Lunas dropped his opponent who was ranked No. 3 no less than four times before Zuiyama?s corner threw in the towel at :58 seconds of the eighth round.
Lunas who was rated No.2 by the OPBF won the title relinquished by champion Malcolm Tunacao last June 7 who aims to challenge for the world title, according to the OPBF official.
The fight took place at the Sambo Hall in Kobe, Japan and the referee was Yuji Fukuchi.
Lucas who was coming off a 1st round TKO of Indonesia?s Rasmanudin last April 24 proved too good for Mercado who was rated No. 1 by the OPBF and had a string of 13 wins and 2 draws after losing the Philippine super flyweight title to Eden Sonsona by a 9th round TKO on October 14, 2006.
With the win Lucas improves to 29-8[1 with 17 knockouts while the 31 year old Mercado drops to 23-2-3 with 8knockouts.
