Giovani Segura confirms that his next fight is with newly crowned WBO flyweight champ Brian Viloria. "It's mandatory." he said when I chatted with him earlier today. He does not have the details yet on where the fight is going to take place or the exact date but verbalizes he is already training for it.
Segura is fresh from a recent victory last month against Eddy Zuniga of Mexico. He knocked out Zuniga in the first round of a scheduled ten rounder in Mexico last June 18.The fight was at 115 pounds which is at junior bantamweight level. I asked him why at junior bantamweight. He replied that "It's because it was a last minute fight so that's why 115."
His most notable performance of late was his domination of previously undefeated light flyweight king, Ivan Calderon. He took the WBO light flyweight title and the WBA Super World light flyweight title from the long reigning Calderon in their first meeting in August 8,2010 with an eight round KO in Calderon's hometown of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. He repeated that same feat when they met for a rematch, less than eight months after winning the title. Segura topped his previous performance as he knocked Caderon out in the 3rd round of their fight in Baja California, Mexico.
That pair of splendid knockouts made him the top boxer in the light flyweight division on most rankings, taking over Calderon who long held that recognition. He is also currently ranked number eight in the pound for pound list of the prestigious Ring Magazine.
I asked him of his reaction to Viloria's challenge to "Bring it on." He said Viloria has no choice but to fight him. "It's on paper," he added. He is referring to the WBA mandate that the winner of Viloria's recent fight last July 17 with erstwhile flyweight champ Jose Luis Miranda will have to defend the title in 90 days against Segura.
Segura is currently in training this early in Los Angeles not far from where he lives in nearby Downey, California. He trains under Javier Capetillo who used to train Antonio Margarito. He said he is willing to fight Viloria in Hawaii or the Philippines for Viloria's flyweight belt. I asked him if he'd prefer Mexico or Los Angeles instead which is his home turf. "I don't care, It's okay for me. Let's just fight," was his reply.
In parting, I asked him if he's got any message to Viloria, he just simply said "Good luck." Viloria is currently in the Philippines for a well deserved break after his gruelling fight with Miranda. He also received accolades from various organizations most especially the city of Manila where he was given recognition by Mayor Fred Lim. This fight has not been put on paper yet but it already promises to be a slam bang affair between two of boxing's gritty warriors in the lighter weight division.
