Unheralded Filipino Roilo "The Phoenix" Golez has stunned Thailand?s WBC Asian Boxing Council minimum weight champion Thongthailek Sor Tanapinyo to grab the title with a 10th round TKO at Ban Klongkratumban School in Samutsakorn province over the weekend.
Golez who reportedly trains himself dominated the fight in the first five rounds with cracking combinations to the head and body.
Thongthailek came back in round six but the body shots of Golez took its toll and the Mindanao fighter ended the bout with a series of vicious blows to the body that dropped the hapless Thai three times in the tenth round before referee Tanawat Wongsasan called a halt at 1:04 of the round with Thongthailek lying helpless on the canvas.
The fight card was promoted by the well known Kokiet Group of Thailand.
Panamanian boxing writer Carlos Costa who was at ringside reported that it was ?an awesome and dramatic victory for the shy young Filipino whose only dreams was to become a champion.?
With the win the 23 year old Golez improved to 12-6 with 4 knockouts while Thongthailek dropped to 16-15 with 8 knockouts.
