BAUTISTA SHOCKS EUROPEAN CHAMPION IN PRESIDENT'S CUP BOXING IN JAKARTA

Ian Clark Bautista, a soft-spoken 16-year-old shocked European Cup champion Alexander Samoylov of Russia with a smashing 13-5 score to nail his second straight win in the 21st President's Cup at the Senayan Indoor Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia late Tuesday.
Bautista who is from Negros Occidental won his opening bout against Myanmar's gritty Htet Aung in a slambang affair 16-8 but it was his spectacular showing against the solidly built 22 year old Russian champion with a menacing look that won the admiration of fight fans and a jubilant Philippine delegation headed by Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson.
Picson told the Daily Inquirer that Bautista showed uncanny hand-speed, crisp, accurate punching and measured aggression that baffled and bewildered the Russian veteran who was six years older than the Filipino teenager.
Samoylov won the light flyweight title in the European Cup in Ukraine last October 24 beating rugged Elvin Mamishzada of Azerbaijan getting the nod on a countback after the fight ended in a 3:3 deadlock.
The Filipino delegation which was overjoyed at Bautista's opening day win over Aung showed genuine concern when they learned that the kid's next opponent was the experienced and tough Samoylov. But Bautista, nicknamed "Yan-Yan" was unfazed, merely asking his coaches what he needed to do to overcome the heavily favored Russian champion.
Picson reported that Bautista executed the coaches fight plan "with precision, rocking the entire Senayan Indoor Stadium with his masterful performance."
Riding on Bautista's giant-slaying feat, the inspired Filipino boxing crew, backed by ABAP chairman and renowned businessman-sportsnman Manny Pangilinan and president Ricky Vargas, won four of their five assignments on Day 2 of the tournament which has drawn 28 teams from various parts of the world. Overall, the Philippines has registered nine impressive wins against three losses.
Multi-titled team captain Charly Suarez started off tentatively but quickly found his rhythm to prove his class in a 14-6 win over slick Japanese opponent Kenji Fujita.
Nathaniel Montealto scored a somewhat close win over Indonesia's hometown favorite Vinky Montolu 11-8. After an even contest at the end of two rounds with the score 7-7, Montealto found the range in the final round where he outscored his Indonersian opponent 4-1 to clinch the victory.
A handful of disgruntled fans tried to start a minor riot which forced officials to halt the next bout which was already in the second round before security personnel subdued the troublemakers who were trying to incite the crowd. Many Indonesians were apologetic and explained to the visitors that the fracas was caused by a handful of sore losers.
When the trouble started Picson said he ordered the team to immediately return to their hotel to avoid further agitation. He said "We didn't want to spoil the mood and detract from our boxers' achievements. Besides, we still have a lot of work to do. The tougher tasks are ahead of us. We intend to remain focused."
Promising 19 year old female boxer Nesthy Petecio gave Mongolia's Shinetsetseg Davaasuren a classic boxing lesson to win by a wide 32-4 margin. The only setback on day two was the disappointing loss of Nico Magliquian who was beaten by Vietnamese Nguyen Van Hai, 9-19.
Bautista, Petecio and Montealto are assured of bronze medals, while Josie Gabuco, Analisa Cruz, and Suarez attempt to join them as they take on separate rivals in the quarterfinal round Wednesday.
The Philippine coaching staff is composed of former Olympian Ronald Chavez, Sonny Dollente and female coach Mitchel Martinez.
