San Antonio, Texas ? Mark Melligen?s coming out party tonight at the Freeman Coliseum of this historic city was derailed by a rugged veteran in Argentinean Sebastian Lujan. Lujan, 37-5-2 (23 KO?s), took the fight in a short notice after Melligen?s original opponent Freddy Martinez of Mexico withdrew after sustaining injury in training.
The favored Melligen 21-2, (14 KO?s) of Bacolod City, Philippines is the headline of tonight?s nationally (U.S) televised serving of ESPN?s Friday Night Fight. He dominated the first three rounds of the fight as he used his jabs to thwart the advances of Lujan. He was cut in his right eye late in the second round but managed to fight through it until he was hurt by Lujan with a big right hand in the 4th and the fight was a different story from then on. He survived the round and put up and regained points on much of the 5th round but a barrage of head shots from Lujan found its way to Melligen forcing him down in the canvas in round 6. Melligen came back up and came back firing from the knockdown enabling him to survive the round but Lujan continued his attack in the seventh forcing yet another knockdown.
Round 8 was the same as the previous one as Lujan forced his way on the exhausted Filipino. Melligen managed to fire good shots of his own but those don?t seem to hurt the rampaging Argentinean. Another crushing right from Lujan dropped Melligen for a third time late in the round. He finished the job in the 9th as he landed multiple punches on the weary Melligen knocking him out in the 2:15 mark. Melligen was counted out by the referee and spent a long time lying in the canvass prompting the ringside physician to check on him. Melligen was able to get up a couple of minutes after that and was able to walk to his corner while Lujan celebrated.
The win extended the winning streak of the veteran from Rosario, Sta. Fe Argentina to twelve while halting Melligen?s five fight winning streak. The young prospect who now resides in Las Vegas is a victim of yet another upset that characterized most of this year?s fights in this weekly boxing series of ESPN.
