Rey Saludar.
Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar and younger brother and bronze medalist Victorio Saludar have scored contrasting victories to enter the semi finals of the tough China Open boxing championships in Guizhou province.
Victorio, regarded by many as the more skilled of the two brothers, displayed masterful moves in befuddling his opponent Ganselem Ariunbold of Mongolia.
The 20 year-old Victorio deftly parried his opponents' initial attempts at muscling him and used his speed and terrific combinations to take the opening round handily by an 8-1 margin.
The younger Saludar continued to dominate his opponent in round two even as the Chinese fans began to cheer the Filipino who raced to a 13-3 lead at the end of the round.
Ariunbold made a valiant effort to try and recover in round three by trading punches with Saludar but paid the price when he was rocked and given a standing eight count by the referee. Saludar eventually won by a lopsided 15-5 margin.
In the semi finals Saludar goes up against hometown favorite and classy Olympic Games gold medalist Zhou Shi Ming in what will surely be the fight of his young life.
The elder Saludar, 23 year old Rey had to shake off some of the cobwebs that gathered when he got tied up with duties as a Philippine Army man and reported for training only last May, 3 months late.
The Asian Games gold medalist edged counter-punching Pakistani Muhammad Wassem by a 7-6 score in the opening round.
Rey connected with crisp combinations in round two while his Pakistani opponent appeared content to throw just one punch at a time enabling Rey to lead 12-10 at the end of the round.
Wassem resorted to holding in round three while Saludar delivered the cleaner punches to win 15-12.
In the semi frinals Rey Saludar will engage his victim in the finals of last year's Asian Games in Guangzhou, Chang Yong in a rematch. Chang made short work of his Myanmar opponent in the quarters, scoring an RSC (referee stopped contest) win in the second round.
Lone female boxer, 27 year old Analisa Cruz who overcame a sluggish start to come from behind and score a scintillating 11-6 victory over Myanmar?s Naing Hnin Mo Mo faces China?s multi-titled Ren Can Can in another stiff test in the semis.
Cruz who was sidelined last year due to a shoulder injury last fought in the MVP Cup in July 2010 where she won the gold medal in the 54 kg weight category but has moved down to flyweight where she is more comfortable.
ABAP executive director Ed Picson refused to make predictions but said ?It?s obviously an uphill climb but the team is upbeat. We'll give it a go."
The tournament ends Saturday.
