Lanky Tomas Rojas retained his WBC super flyweight title when challenger Juan Jose ?Goofy? Montes didn?t come out for the twelfth and final round in Chiapas, Mexico earlier today..
The 30 year old southpaw Rojas who won the vacant title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Japan?s Kohei Kono in Saitama on September 20, improved his record to 36-12-1 with 24 knockouts while the popular 21 year old ?Goofy? Montes dropped to 19-2 with 12 knockouts.
Rafael Soto of boxingscene.com reported that Rojas ?systematically punished his opponent from the start of the fight and broke him down as the bout went along. Montes was never able to land one of his signature knockout punches. He was beaten up to the head and body, with significant swelling all over his face by the late rounds.?
Rojas lost a ten round unanimous decision to the now retired former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa in a tough fight at the Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines on July 2, 2006 on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios title fight.
Montes got the title shot after winning a 5th round technical decision over Filipino Sylvester Lopez in a title eliminator on October 2, 2010 when Montes was badly cut and they were forced to go to the scorecards of the judges who all turned in identical 46-45 scorecards.
