One of the most skilled Mexican fighters Cristian Mijares retained his IFB super flyweight title in his first defense against challenger Carlos Rueda at the Palanque de la Feria Nacional in Durango, Mexico on Sunday, Manila Time.
Mijares who tipped the scales at 114.6 pounds completely out-boxed the game Rueda who had weighed a little heavier at 114.8 pounds. Mijares had won the title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Juan Alberto Rosas last December 11.
Mijares at one time held the WBC, WBA and IBF titles before he lost by a 9th round knockout to hard-hitting Vic Drachinyan on November 1, 2008..
All three judges Ruben Garcia, Albert Bennett and Filipino Jonathan Davis who is now based in the US had Mijares a comfortable winner over Rueda. Two judges scored it a shutout at 120-108 while the third judge had Mijares the winner 118-110.
With the win Mijares improved his record to 42-6-2 with 18 knockouts while Rueda dropped to 16-5-1 with 13 knockouts.
Filipino judge Davis is best known for his having scored the Vic Darchinyan-Z ?The Dream? Gorres IBF super flyweight title eliminator in favor of Drachinyan 114-112 . Thai judge Montol Suriyachand had Gorres the winner 113-112 while Ces Perkins had it an even 113-113 resulting in a split draw on February 2, 2008 at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu..
The result deprived Gorres of a title shot at Dmitry ?The Baby? Kirilov since Darchinyan was ranked one rung higher than Gorres. Darchinyan demolished Kirilov to win the title via a 5th round knockout on August 2, 2008.
