Hard hitting southpaw Michael Farenas has replaced former Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation super featherweight champion Allan Tanada on the big Top Rank fight card on the eve of the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley showdown in Las Vegas on May 7.

Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz told the Inquirer that Tanada who was scheduled to face Gil Garcia in one of three bouts featuring Filipinos at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino was pulled out after an eye specialist discovered that he didn?t have a torn retina as initially feared but has a cataract.

Koncz said ?we will have it repaired? and get him a fight in the future. He said they had picked Farenas, a prot?g? of former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa to replace Tanada. Koncz said there is no word yet on who Farenas will fight.

The 26 year old Farenas has a record of 30-3-3 with 26 knockouts and had an impressive run of four wins in the US beginning on October 6, 2007 when he won by a 2nd round TKO over Arturo Valenzona.

Farenas followed up with a 3rd round TKO over Baudel Cardenas on March 15, 2008, an eighth round unanimous decision over Fermin De Los Santos on May 17, 2008 and a 1st round knockout over Walter Estrada on May 1, 2009. Farenas figured in a 2nd round technical decision against highly touted Arturo Gomez in Nayarit, Mexico on Juky 25, 2009.

In his last fight on January 14 this year, Farenas battled Ariel Delgado in an exciting, action-packed bout in Paranaque to win a majority decision.

The top Filipino fighter on the card is former featherweight title challenger Bernabe Concepcion (28-4-1, 15 KO?s) who will face Juan Calos ?El Pez? Martinez (18-12-1, 7 KO?s). Concepcion is looking to redeem himself from a 2nd round TKO loss to WBO champion Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez who subsequently lost his title in a stunning upset at the hands of Mexico?s Oscar Salido.

Also seeing action will be super flyweight Marlon Tapales (16-1, 5 KO?s), a prot?g? of Pacquiao?s friend and sometime confidant Rex ?Wakee? Salud. Tapales will face a challenging task against undefeated Austreberto Juarez (10-0, 2 KO?s), a prime sparring partner of WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire.

Juarez came back from a f our-year layoff last year with a pair of solid wins over Ernie Marquez and Joseph Rios. Boxing writer Chris Robinson described Juarez, a Mexican who fights out of Ventura, California as ?a well-conditioned boxer who knows when to attack and mixes his punches up well to the body and head.?

Juarez was a National Golden Gloves and United States amateur light flyweight champion in 2003 and US amateur champion also in 2004.
