Mashantucket CT. - I caught up with Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions at the post-fight press conference for Victor Ortiz here at the Foxwoods MGM and inquired about any new development on the status of WBC and WBO bantamweight champ Nonito Donaire.

?No, the judge is dealing with it so I really have no update,? was his reply. He is referring to retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein who is appointed as the arbiter on the dispute between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Boxing over whose company has a valid contract for Donaire.

Weinstein issued an initial ruling on March 29, 2011 that prohibited Golden Boy Promotions from promoting Donaire and that Golden Boy Promotions violated a previous agreement with Top Rank Boxing not to poached each other?s fighters when it signed Donaire on March 16,2011.

Schaefer did mention that he sees a resolution of the case happening this year but declined to give further comments. ?Oh, I?m sure that it?s going to happen but I really don?t want to talk about it,? was his brief answer.

Since his spectacular knockout victory of Fernando Montiel on February 19, 2011 to capture the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles, fans are eager to see Donaire back in action. A proposed May 28,2011 fight against Anselmo Moreno was scrapped due to the recent contract dispute.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Sunday that Nonito Donaire agreed to have Weinstein decide on whether he has a binding contract with Top Rank Boxing and is scheduled to meet Donaire next month. Donaire?s manager Cameron Dunkin said that he is hoping the case is resolved by early June as stated from the report.

?I know that the Filipino fight fans are eager, we are eager, the American fight fans are eager because Nonito Donaire showed why he is one of the best fighters in the world. So everybody is anxiously awaiting for Nonito to come back,? was Schaefer?s parting message.
