Former five-time world champion Erik ?El Terrible? Morales who put on a gallant performance against Marcos Maidana before losing a majority decision in a fight which many ringsiders said the Mexican legend deserved to win, has been suspended until June 9.
Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer informed the Inquirer that the suspension was ordered ?due to the facial laceration and swelling.?
Despite his right eye being shut as early as the second round, the 34 year old Morales who was a 6 to 1 underdog, gave the bigger and stronger Maidana all he could handle and on several occasions had the Argentine in trouble forcing him to grapple and hold.
Morales who is best known for his epic trilogy with another Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera who won two of their three fights in extremely close encounters also lost 2-1 against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Morales won the first by a unanimous decision when Pacquiao suffered a nasty gash over his right eye in the fifth round but fought on gallantly until the end losing by two points on the scorecards of all three judges.
However, Pacquiao came back with a vengeance to stop Morales in round ten in their rematch and then resolved any doubts in the minds of fight fans and media with a devastating third round knockout in their final meeting.
In a post fight press conference after the loss to Maidana, Morales said he wanted a rematch and Maidana responded by saying he was willing to give it to him.
