Marco Antonio Barrera.

Atlantic City, New Jersey - Marco Antonio Barrera was present at the weigh - in for tonight?s event featuring Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jorge Solis on Friday afternoon at the Caesars Atlantic Casino. The Mexican great is here covering the event as commentator for ESPN Deportes. As he finishes up his hosting job, I approached him and ask him about fellow Mexican great and rival Erik Morales? upcoming fight against Argentinean Marcos Maidana on April 9. ?Its a tough fight for Erik Morales because Maidana now is very strong. ? he replied. The two Mexican great boxers share a great deal of history with each other, a lot of history in the ring. Their fight in 2000 was one of the greatest matches ever fought this decade. It was a battle so intense and exciting that left the two boxers bloodied and battered at the end of the fight which Barrera loss by a split decision. The fight was adjudged the Fight of the Year by Ring Magazine. ? I don?t know.? he replied when I asked him of Morales? chances against the rugged Maidana. ?You know why?, because of the weight. I think Morales has to lose a lot weight.? Morales is fighting Maidana at 140 pounds for the interim W.B.A. world lightweight title.

He also gave his thoughts on another Mexican great and previous competitor on Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez is rumored to jump to Top Rank from Golden Boy in hopes of landing a third fight with Manny Pacquiao. ?It?s a good fight but it won?t look the same as the last two fights Marquez have with Manny Pacquiao. Now it?s very different. Manny Pacquiao now is very strong, Manny Pacquiao is going to win.? he remarked. Marquez is desperate for a third match with Pacquiao that news is he will announce his defection to Top Rank soon. If that happens, that will make the trilogy with Pacquiao an easy deal to make. If Pacquiao gets pass by Mosley in May 7, a rumored November fight is already being eyed by Top Rank for the two.

As Marco Antonio makes his way out of the Palladium Hall of the Caesars Atlantic Casino, I asked him if he is fighting once again. He replied, ?Maybe in June.? Barrera won his last fight ,knocking out Jose Arias in two rounds in Mexico last month. If Morales? pulls the upset against Maidana , maybe a different trilogy will happen sooner than Pacquiao - Marquez III. This one featuring Barrera and Morales instead. It?s going to be war once again if that happens. D?j? vu anyone?
