Former two-time world light flyweight champion Brian Viloria will face reigning WBO flyweight champion Julio Cesar ?Pingo? Miranda in a mandatory title fight although there are reports on the internet that Miranda will defend his title in a rematch with another Filipino, Richie Mepranum, on April 30 in Las Vegas.
Miranda won the vacant title with a 5th round TKO over Mepranum on June 12, 2010 in Mexico.
Viloria?s manager Gary Gittelsohn told the Inquirer that Miranda has to defend his title against Viloria who is ranked No. 1 and is the mandatory challenger. He said he had ?reached out to Fernando Beltran who is the promoter of Miranda to see if we could work out a date and a site and reasonable terms for the fight.?
Gittelsohn said he would ?like to bring the fight if I can make an attractive enough offer to Beltran and Miranda, to Manila? where Viloria won the IBF title with a spectacular 11th round knockout of fancied Mexican champion Ulises Solis on April 19, 2009.
Viloria?s manager said that should they fail to come to terms ?then our only option is to go to a purse bid.? However, Gittelsohn who said he knows Beltran very well and for a very long time was confident they "will be able to work out terms.?
Gittelsohn noted that WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel is also a very good friend and said ?I think he will do what he can to be a good mediator.?
Viloria?s manager said that he had met with Solar Sports CEO Peter Chanliong who had always supported Viloria?s career and although Solar appeared to have downsized its involvement in sports on free TV he would ?always give Solar an opportunity to be involved in Brian?s career before anyone else because of the loyalty they have shown thus far.?
Gittelsohn added ? if Solar wants to be involved and it makes sense for them to be involved then they will be, but if not then we?ll look for another partner.?
Viloria was meantime in intensive training at the Maywood Gym and Gittelsohn said he had asked Viloria ?to pull back a little bit? because a date hadn?t been finalized for the title fight.
Gittelsohn noted that ?with more of the activity certainly with Nonito Donaire?s victory, it has given Brian an impetus to really get back because he misses it badly.? The manager said that although he hasn?t begun sparring Viloria is in the gym every day.
