His heavy schedule as a lawmaker representing the Province of Sarangani has, again, come in the way of eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao?s preparation for his World Boxing Organization title fight with Sugar Shane Mosley set May 7 in Las Vegas.
Already, the start of his scheduled three-week training yesterday at the Elorde Gym in Quezon City was canceled and moved to another day within the week, according to Canadian adviser Michael Koncz.
?No, we have to cancel it because of his (Pacquiao?s) hectic schedule of meetings, appointments, etc.,? Koncz told Malaya. ?Obviously, Manny wants that when he started training, his mind and attention will be focused on it and no other else.?
Asked if the Elorde Gym, the same venue where he begun his preparations for his fight with Mexican Antonio Margarito last year, will still be used as launching pad of this year?s training, Koncz answered: ?Maybe yes, maybe no. It depends on Freddie (chief trainer Freddie Roach).?
Roach, who had earlier expressed desire to go straight to Baguio City to start the build up program to avoid the distractions that hampered preparations last year, is set to arrive today from Los Angeles.
?If Freddie decides on training in Manila first, then we start at Elorde. If he opts to skip Manila, the team goes to Baguio in the soonest possible time,? Koncz explained. ?What is certain though is we start preparing within the week.?
Despite the initial disruption, Koncz assured that the Pacman has been very eager to train and will be ready when fight, scheduled May 7 at the MGM Grand, comes.
?As I told you, he has already started training in General Santos all by himself and I believe we?re on track,? he said.
Koncz was referring to light stamina-building workout that included road work, calisthenics, and even basketball, Pacquiao has engaged himself in immediately upon his arrival from the United States a little over a week ago
Koncz could also assure whether Roach will be arriving with Pacquiao?s pair of sparing mates ? lightweight David Rodela of California and undefeated Shawn Porter ? in tow.
Also expected within the week is strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza.
