EX CHAMP AGUIRRE RETIRES

Former World Boxing Council minimum weight champion Jose Antonio ?Jaguar? Aguirre has decided to quit following his 9th round TKO loss to fellow Mexican Gilberto Keb Baas last Saturday.

The 34 year old Aguirre won the minimum weight title with a majority decision over Thailand?s Wandee Singwancha on February 11, 2000 and lost the title almost four years later to Japan-based Thai Eagle Den Junlaphan (Eagle Kyowa) by a unanimous decision on January 10, 2004.

Aguirre defended his title nine times.

During his reign, Aguirre defeated Filipino challenger Manny Melchor by a unanimous twelve round decision to retain his title on February 2, 2001.

As a light flyweight he fought some of the best including WBC champion Brian Viloria of the Philippines to whom he lost by a twelve round unanimous decision on February 18, 2006.

He also lost in title fights for the WBA crown held by Roberto Vasquez and the IBF title held by Ulises Solis.

Aguirre retires with a ring record of 35-101 with 21 knockouts.
