Eight-division champion and reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight title-holder Manny Pacquiao is back in Manila following a four-city United States press tour marked by a historic albeit brief visit to President Barack Obama.
Pacquiao, a lawmaker representing the Province of Sarangani in the Lower House, arrived yesterday with wife Jinkee from Hollywood where he stayed for about a week after hyping his coming fight against Sugar Shane Mosley in the cities of Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Washington.
The Filipino boxing icon, is staking his WBO welterweight crown against Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, immediately announced his readiness to plunge into training in preparation for that 12-round confrontation.
His routine two-month training for a fight starts on March 8 or 9 in Baguio City where he also held his build up program in his three previous encounters against Miguel Cotto in 2009 and Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito last year.
But first, Pacquiao told ABS-CBN upon arrival, he must report for work in congress before proceeding to hometown General Santos City where he intends to warm up prior to subjecting himself to rigorous training in Baguio.
Chief trainer Freddie Roach will be arriving early March to supervise preparations.
Training at the country?s summer capital will last for three weeks before Team Pacquiao moves to Los Angeles April 2 where, as usual, he will stay for a month at the Roach-owned Wild Card Gym. He ends his honing up regimen with a week?s stint in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao?s visit to the White House Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) was the only second by a Filipino athlete, next only to late golfer Celestino Tugot?s visit to then President Dwight Eisenhower, a fellow par buster, in the 60s.
Pacquiao invited Obama to his fight but the U.S. Head of State declined saying he?ll just watch it via pay-per-view.
Although he refused to predict the outcome of his showdown with three-division champ Mosley, odds makers in the sin city of Nevada is giving the ?Fighter of the Decade? awardee a whooping 7-1 odds to win.
?Hindi naman ako nagpa-predict eh. Ibibigay lang natin ang ating makakaya. Kung maitumba, bonus na lang iyon dahil sa pag-eensayo ng matindi,? Pacquiao answered when asked ?
Odds mean that every $700 bet placed on Pacquiao will only yield $100 while a $350 bet on Mosley will get $500.
