Moments ago, Filipino bantamweight Nonito Donaire, Jr. (pictured above) becomes a new boxing star and validates his No. 4 pound-for-pound ranking by knocking out the durable Fernando Montiel of Mexico at 2:25 of the second round and snatches the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles at the Mandalay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The first round saw Donaire displaying crisp punches and superior footwork to tag Montiel with good lefts and rights and easily took the round. Montiel however seemed to get his rhythm in the second round and hit Donaire with good right but Donaire almost simultaneously timed Montiel with a left cross that sent Montiel crushing to the canvas.
Montiel struggled to get up but clearly he was out of his senses but the referee allowed the fight to continue. Donaire immediately came to finish Montiel delivered a left that staggered Montiel towards the rope before the referee finally stopped the contest at 2:25 of the round.
With the electrifying performance, Donaire clearly has become one of the hottest properties of boxing next only to Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and Argentina's Sergio Martinez.
