While the Philippine Basketball Association did much better in terms of attendance and gate receipts compared to last year?s Philippine Cup, the new darlings of Philippine sports ? the Azkals national football team continued to show its strength in attracting television audiences by rating higher than the recent PBA All Filipino Cup finals.

PBA attendance per game day was up by 8 percent and the average gameday receipts improved by a whopping 25 percent according to Media Bureau chief Willie Marcial.

However, in the critical venue of nationwide television ratings the Azkals game against Mongolia in the first leg of the AFC Champions Cup at a jampacked Panaad Stadium last Tuesday, out-rated the classic six game pro league finals between San Miguel Beer and Talk N? Text both nationwide and in Mega Manila.

The championship series was aired over Solar TV-RPN Channel 9 while the Azkals game was telecast ?live? on Studio 23, the UHF channel of the ABS-CBN broadcast network which will also telecast the PBA games beginning the import reinforced second conference.

The Azkals game had a national rating of 5.73 percent and a Mega Manila rating of 6.51. In the Visayas region which is a hotbed of football, the Azkals-Mongolia game rated a high of 10.3 percent while in Mindanao it rated 5.9.

The PBA Finals ratings per game on a National and Mega Manila basis was as follows:

Game 1 rated 3.2 and 3.7, Game 2 - 3.5 and 4.6, Game 3 - 3.1 and 3.7, Game 4 - 5.7 and 6.7, Game 5 3.9 and 4.4 and Game 6 ? 4.0 and 5.2 respectively nationally and in Mega Manila.

The ratings trend began in the second game of the AFC Suzuki Cup semi finals between the Azkals and Indonesia which went almost head-to-head with the San Miguel Beer-Air 21 gave on December 19 rated significantly higher.

The football rated 3.7 percent nationally while the pro league San Miguel-Air 21 game rated 2.7 and Ginebra-Alaska 2.8 with the Ginebra ratings pulled down by weak ratings in Mindanao.

In the breakdown of the ratings the football match rated 3.8 percent as against 3.3 for basketball while in Metro Manila football out-rated basketball 4.2 against 3.7.

In the suburbs the RP-Indonesia game rated 3.1 as against 2.9 for the San Miguel ?Air 21 showdown while in Northern Luzon the gap was much wider with football garnering a 3.5 rating and basketball 1.3 percent.

In the Visayas region which is regarded as a growing hotbed of football, Game 2 of the RP-Indonesia semi finals rated double that of the SMB-Air 21 game, 5.4 to 2.7 percent while in Mindanao football also was way ahead rating 5.3 percent to 2.8 for the PBA game.
