Right-hand throwing Julie Mari Muyco shackled University of the East for mere three hits in powering Adamson University to a 2-0 shutout victory to regain the UAAP Women?s Softball Championship via a rare 10-game sweep of the two-round elimination over the weekend at the University of the Philippines grounds.
With Muyco, a 19-year-old sophomore from Bacolod City mesmerizing the Lady Warriors with her variety of risers and knuckle balls throughout the seven-inning encounter, her teammates peppered Jenny Pangilinan with six connections, including a pair at the top of the third frame that all but doused cold water on UE?s hopes to turn the game around and extend the tournament for two more rounds.
A two-base hit line shot by shortstop Marissa dela Cruz was all the Lady Falcons needed to clinch the title they yielded to the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses in the league?s 73rd season and gifted Adamson its 11th title since 1997 and coach Ana Santiago her sixth since he took over Filomeno ?Boy? Codinera as head mentor in 2004.
With two outs and Arlene Tubongbanua in second following a single, De La Cruz, a pride of Cavite who just completed her third year as a Lady Falcons, swung at Pangilinan?s second pitch sending the ball to deep right-center field and sending the former crossing the plate standing that broke a scoreless standoff after two completed innings.
?Masayang-masaya ako at nakabalik kami sa trono,? the bantam Santiago, also of Cavite who also coach the Philippine Blu Girls to the 2007 Southeast Asian Games and the Manila Golden Girls to back-to-back Big League World Series for girls softball in the 16-18 age bracket in 2009 and 2010, said after her and the Lady Falcons? title victory.
?Sayang wala dito si coach Boy, alam ko matutuwa din siya sa panalo,? Santiago said in reference to Codinera who is still in the Unijted States in the course of his annual medical checkup following a stroke a few years back.
It was also the first time that Santiago handed Adamson a title without Codinera, who has been Adamson?s coaching consultant since retiring in 2004, at her back.
So overwhelming were the Lady Falcons in the two months-and-a-half series, they, likewise, swept all except one of the individual honors with sophomore Luzviminda Embudo clinching the Most Valuable Player award besides emerging. too, as the batting champion, homerun queen, most runs batted in and best in slugging.
Muyco romped off with the best pitcher honors, while Dela Cruz and Elma Parohinog shared the most stolen bases award. Only the rookie of the year award, won by La Salle?s Sarah Steward, escaped the Lady Falcons? grip.
Muyco, younger sister of Cloiene, erstwhile no. 1 hurler in the country, was so imposing on the mound, she only allowed four runners on, including one on a base-on-balls, all of them never reached home on account of the lady Falcons? stonewall defense.
Another extra-base hit, again courtesy of Dela Cruz?s triple, in the sixth completed the rout as Muyco, manning Adamson?s first line of defense, repeatedly thwarted each and every attempt of the Lady Warriors to reverse the outcome and send the tournament into the semifinal round featuring the top four teams in the eliminations and the championship round.
Dela Cruz?s third connections of her four times at bat for the day saw catcher Elvie Entrina, who singles earlier, home for the Lady Falcons? second marker.
