15 year old Filipino boxer Miles Delmindo is making waves in amateur boxing in the US. The welterweight who was fighting only his sixth bout in the 2011 Silver Gloves boxing tournament for 15 year olds and under lost a controversial decision to two-time US national champion Derrell Gibbs and the No. 1 ranked 15 year old in the US who has had over 50 amateur bouts.

Miles? father Mario Delmindo informed the Inquirer that because the fight was so close the president of USA Boxing in Ohio, Gene Campbell, called Delmindo?s coach Russ Niggemyer to offer the vacant 156 pound middleweight division to Miles in what was considered an unprecedented move.

Miles will represent Ohio in the Silver Gloves Regional Championships to be held at Terre Haute, Indiana on January 15.

Delmindo notes ?we Filipinos are all too familiar with a welterweight fighting in the middleweight division? in obvious reference to pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, the WBO welterweight champion who won the vacant WBC light middleweight title with a smashing victory over Antonio Margarito last November 13 in Texas.

Miles and his father visited the Philippines last year and the youngster worked out at the Amateur Boxing Association Gym. They watched the finals of the MVP International Invitational tournament in Manila and the gangling youngster indicated his desire to return and represent the Philippines in future tournaments.
