Melligen (R) with trainer Tony Martin.
Welterweight Mark Jason Melligen battles tough Mexican Gabriel ?El Rey? Martinez on the undercard of the WBC/WBO bantamweight title fight between Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and champion Fernando ?KO-Chulito? Montiel in Las Vegas on February 19.
Melligen?s trainer, longtime Cebu resident Tony Martin informed the Inquirer Friday that Top Rank Promotions well known matchmaker Brad Goodman had told him that Martinez was the replacement for Michael Rosales.
Rosales who had won a split decision over Melligen in a ten round bout on November 13, 2009 and was originally picked to face Melligen in a rematch apparently didn?t want to face the hard-hitting Filipino southpaw for a second time and they had picked Martinez instead.
The 23 year old Martinez has an impressive record of 27-1-1 with 14 knockouts and won three of his last four fights in 2010 after figuring in a two round no contest against world title contender Jesus Soto Karass when Martinez suffered a nasty cut due to an accidental head-butt and was unable to continue.
Martinez gave emerging Mexican star Saul Alvarez a hard fight before retiring in the 12th round of a Fedelcentro welterweight title clash on April 18, 2008 and is coming off a unanimous six round decision over Jesus Valenzuela in a tune up fight last December 17.
Martin said that Melligen, the 24 year old southpaw with a record of 20-2 with 14 knockouts who is currently training at the ALA Gym in Cebu is scheduled to arrive in Las Vegas on January 15 and will continue training at the Floyd Mayweather Gym.
Martin said ?I will leave no stone left unturned in Mark's preparation for this fight. We will not take Martinez lightly, as his record speaks for itself. But we aim to make a statement!?
In his last fight at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu on October 30, 2010, Melligen scored an impressive 3rd round TKO over Bladimir Hernandez.
