GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? ?Six weeks training in the U.S, that's all I want,? Roach tells PhilBoxing here Saturday on how he would like Pacquiao's training for his next fight ? most likely against Sugar Shane Mosley ? should go, short of declaring that he wanted the Philippine training side to be scrapped altogether.
Although there was no announcement made on who will be Manny Pacquiao's next opponent during Pacquiao's birthday bash Friday night, personalities close to the pound for pound king, including Roach himself, have conceded that it would be against the Pomona, California native. ?There were some minor kinks still being ironed out for that fight. The reason why it is still not being announced,? a source said who added that the 'minor kink' ?was to the tune of $2 - $4 million dollars in Manny's favor.?
Pacquiao, who normally trains eight full weeks for his fights, have been quoted as saying that he wanted the first half of his next training to be held in Cebu but Roach was reluctant to the idea. ?Baguio is better, Manila is worst but Cebu has a lot of distractions also,? Roach said who was to the point of walking out when Pacquiao trained in Cebu during the second Pacquiao-Barrera fight in October, 2007.
?I'll take care and control everything,? Pacquiao adviser and close friend Wakee Salud, who owns the gym where Pacquiao would be training in Cebu, told Roach over a cup of coffee. ?Oh yeah? I'll talk to Manny about it,? Roach answered back.
Pacquiao initially trained in Baguio for his last fight against Antonio Margarito last month but Roach and conditioning coach Alex Ariza were far from satisfied at the progress of the training where Pacquiao had to make a lot of 'quick trips' to fulfill commitments, political or otherwise. Added to the distractions was the uncooperative weather condition where at one point a strong typhoon hit the mountain resort bringing in a lot of rains for days preventing Pacquiao to do the necessary roadwork. It was only when the training shifted to Los Angeles three weeks before the fight that Pacquiao had picked up and was finally ready for the big fight.
So for Roach, a six-week solid uninterrupted training at his Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles would be the ideal scenario for Pacquiao's next fight. That would mean Pacquiao has to be in the U.S. by March 25 if the fight was to be held on May 7, 2011 in Las Vegas.
