Welterweight Willie Lopez failed to duplicate the feat of teammates Victorio and Ray Saludar and lost to his Mongolian opponent and thus failed to win at least a bronze medal in boxing at the on-going Asian Games in Guangzhou, China tonight.
Lopez lost to battles Mongolia?s rough and rugged Otgonjargal Jargal 7-1.
The Mongolian scored the first point in round one with ten seconds to go after both fighters appeared tentative.
However, Jargal began to find tnhe range in the second round and piled up the points to lead 4-1 going into the third and final round.
Lopez was charging forward but missing badly against the fleet-footed Jargal who knew he had the fight won and merely stayed out of trouble.
The Filipino?s corner was also slapped a point deduction for excessive coaching which is not allowed under amateur rules.
Amateur Boxing Association executive director Ed Picson said Lopez simply couldn?t c atch the fleet-footed Mongolian and lost 1-7.
Picson said ?we have to settle for three fighters in the semi finals? who are the Saludar brothers Victorio and Rey and female boxer Annie Albania.
