MELLIGEN TKO HERNANDEZ IN THREE

Returning Mark Jason Melligen (20-2-0, 14KO), who fought his last eight bouts in the United States in the last two years, made short work of visiting Mexican Bladimir Hernandez (18-4-0 16KO) via a third TKO victory in front of an appreciative hometown crowd at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu City Saturday night.

Showing quickness and displaying his boxing ability honed at the Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas, Melligen dominated the slower and bulkier Hernandez in the first two rounds. A sustained body attack by Melligen at the start of the third round effectively hurt Hernandez who finally went down for the first time with a solid body shot midway in the round. Another body shot towards the end of the round dropped Hernandez again who was obviously hurt and gasping for breath prompting Referee Teddy Alivio to stop the contest.

Melligen is now looking forward to continue his campaign in the United States where he is expected to fight the elites of the welterweight division under the Top Rank banner.

PAGARA STOPS SAKAORAT IN TWO

Filipino lightweight prospect Jason Pagara sent Sapapetch Sor Sakaorat of Thailand to the canvas three times to win by TKO at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino Saturday night. The end came at 2:24 of the second round.

Pagara unleashed a vicious left to the body of Sakaorat that sent the Thai to the canvas for the first time at the one minute mark of the second round. Sakaorat went down for the second time courtesy of a left cross to the jaw by Pagara. Another body shot by Pagara sent Sakaorat to the canvas for the third time as Referee Tony Pesons waived his hand to stop one-sided contest.

The 18-year-old Pagara, a native of Cagayan de Oro City, has now racked 24 wins with only 1 defeat with 13 knockouts and is now looking forward to shift his campaign in the United States courtesy of a Top Rank invitation.

LAPUT GIVES CANILLAS A NEAT BOXING LESSON

The veteran Ramie Laput gave upstart Larry 'Bon Jovi' Canillas a neat boxing lesson as Laput dominated the highly aggressive but ineffective Canillas with crisp counters and well-timed combinations winning by unanimous decision in an 8 round contest.

The judges scores were: 78-74, 77-75, 78-75 all for the Digos, Davao de Sur native Laput. Philboxing had it 78-74 for Laput.

The Toledo City native Canillas (15-3-0, 12KO) had the determination, the heart and the will to win but his lack of boxing finesse was exposed by the veteran Laput who cooly controlled the fight by using his superior boxing skill. Laput has now upped his record to 39 wins and 4 losses with 17 Kos while Canillas suffered his third loss in 15 starts with 12 knockouts.
