CEBU CITY ? A vicious right cross thrown by Nicaraguan and former two time world champion Luis Alberto Perez hit AJ 'Bazooka' Banal squarely in the head just as the referee separated both combatants at 1:47 in the 7th round that sent Banal sprawling in the canvas could not continue to fight resulting Referee Ver Abainza to declare Banal the winner by disqualification in an unexpected ending of the otherwise exciting fight at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino here Saturday night.
The judges' scores were 59-55, 59-55, 60-54 after the completed six rounds. Philboxing had it 60-54 with Banal winning all rounds.
Banal, showing speed and excellent boxing skill, dominated the former world champion from the outset wobbling the Nicaraguan several times during the contest. In rounds five and six, Perez had already showed signs of slowing down and appeared ready for the taking and it looked like only the championship heart of Perez had allowed him to stay in the contest where at times he also scored solid shots against the surging Cebuano.
In the seventh round, when Banal was looking to end the contest, Perez came back strong and attacked Banal with a barrage of punches which some got through Banal's defenses as Banal wisely hug the Nicaraguan. As Referee Abainza tried to separate the protagonists, Perez hit Banal with that fight-ending right cross.
