Asian Games Countdown

It?s still 44 days into the coming Asian Games, but the City of Guangzhou in China has declared its readiness to host the 16th edition of the quadrennial event set Nov. 12--27 yet.
Halfway past the 100-day countdown and already, all 53 competition venues and 17 training facilities are in tip-top shape, including the Asian Games Town where the Athletes? Village is situated as well as those for technical officials, media, Main Press Center and International Broadcast Center. The Asian Games Town, in fact has been completed and transferred to the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOC) during an elaborate ceremony held August 31.
The Asian Games Town (AGT) is a complex of sports venues complete with accommodation facilities consisting of 8,000 apartments that can accommodate 30,000 people during the Games. Preparations for the hosting had started eight years ago actually, the year when China won the bid during the Busan Asiad, the second biggest sporting conclave in the world next in magnitude only to the Olympic Games.
Just before the last Games in Doha, Qatar, China had already unveiled the logo of the 16th edition in a ceremony held Aug. 26, 2006, perhaps, to show to the world the Chinese people?s foresight and the country?s knack to carry out responsibility to international commitment.
The emblem simply represents a ?goat? in line to Guangzhou?s identity as the ?City of Goats.? According to Chinese tradition, goats are a blessing and bring people back. It is also associated with the Chinese world ?leading goat.?
It was designed by Zhang Quiang from east China?s Jiangxi province. It was selected from about 3,000 designs entered in a competitions. The designer incorporated the goat with four tracks, with the sun shining above it.
Over 14,000 athletes, trainers and coaches from 45 countries and regions are expected to compete in a total of 476 events in 42 sports, reports coming from GAGOC , said.
Thirty-seven sport events under the 'Vigorous Guangzhou' project had bean and will be held in the main hub with the other two in the co-host cities of Foshan and Dongguan, respectively.
Why, many old apartment buildings in Guangzhou are getting a new look ahead of the Asian Games China will be playing for the second time in a little more than two decades counting the 1990 edition in Beijing.
Guangzhou, capital of South China?s Guangdong Province, is investing a total of seven billion Yuan for the beautification of the city alone, including repairs and sprucing up of old buildings and roads
To project a better city image during the Asian Games, Guangzhou has been replacing about 1,000 old flat roofs with new red roofs made of synthetic resin since the end of 2009, according to the Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
