Abner Llanasa is a Filipino boxer who fights out of Sydney in the stable of naturalized Australian Dido Bohol and is another one of those fighters who is exploited and which the boxing authorities in Australia apparently do nothing about.
Llanasa is reportedly 24 years old and according to boxrec.com lost a unanimous six round decision to Costa Katsounis in New South Wales over the weekend.
The striking aspect of the fight was that it was the eleventh straight loss by Llanasa who has a record of 5-17-1 with 3 knockouts while his opponent?s record is 7-1 with 5 knockouts. But even worse than that and something which doctors and nutritionists condemn is the fact that many of these fighters are made to move dramatically up or down in weight just so they can get a fight.
Of course, the fighters who are stationed in Australia are, at best mediocre, in a country loaded with extremely talented fighters.
In his fight against Katsounis who weighed 152 ? pounds, Llanasa weighed 149. But in his previous bout against talented Ahmed Elomar on May 28 which Llanasa lost by a 5th round knockout, he came in at 133 ? pounds while Elomar (16-1-2, 9 KO?s) checked in at 135 pounds.
Just over one month earlier on April 23 to be exact Llanasa retired in the third round with a shoulder injury in a loss to Victor Chernous who weighed 149 ? pounds to the Filipino?s 147 ?. In effect Llanasa dropped 14 pounds in weight in one month and five days.
In Llanasa last fight in the Philippines on November 21, 2009 he fought as a super featherweight (130 pounds) and dropped a ten round majority decision to Amor Tinio after suffering a 3rd round knockout at the hands of Jaypee Ignacio on June 21, 2009.
Respected Australian promoters we have spoken to have nothing but disdain for Bohol?s questionable activities and lament the fact that the individual exploiting Filipino boxers is, or at least was, a Filipino.
