AUSTRALIAN BOXING AUTHORITIES ALLOW CALLOUS EXPLOTATION OF SOME FILIPINO BOXERS

Two fights involving Filipino boxers in Australia over the weekend have once again highlighted the failure of the Aussie boxing authorities to prevent the callous exploitation of some mediocre fighters from the Philippines.

Although Rey Anton Olarte, the 27 year old Sydney-based Filipino scored a 4th round TKO over Australian Casey Hannan in a fight card in Southport, Queensland where the Filipino weighed 145 ? pounds and his opponent 149 ?, the intriguing aspect of Olarte who is reportedly managed by Dido Bohol, a migrant from Cebu who has been condemned by some Australian promoters for exploiting fighters he recruits from the Philippines, is that Olarte in his previous fights had been moving up and down in weight like a yo-yo.

In his previous fight on June 26 against Juan Farzan Ali which he lost by an eight round split decision Olarte came in at 133 ? pounds which meant he had moved up almost 16 pounds to fight Hannan.

According to boxrec.com when Olarte faced Naoufel Ben Rabah and lost on May 10 he came in at 143 ? pounds while Rabah weighed 146.

In an April 29 bout when he lost a four round decision to Ryan Langham, Olarte weighed in at 135 ? while his opponent weighed 135. Facing Pat Rullo over whom he won a six round unanimous decision on February 27 this year Olarte tipped the scales at 149 pounds while Rullo checked in at 153 ?.

In his December 2, 2009 clash with Sedat Tacsi which ended in a 2nd round technical draw Olarte was listed at weighing 136 pounds while Tasci was 137 ?.

On Saturday, there was another case of rank exploitation this time involving Junmar Dulog another boxer of Dido Bohol.

Dulog suffered his fifth straight loss in an eight round unanimous decision to Tim Hunt in Brunswick, Victoria. The dubious fact is that Dulog and hunt both fought as welterweight at 146 pounds but in his previous bout which he lost by a 4th round TKO to Petert Mitrevski Jr, Dulog came in at 155 ? pounds and faced Mitrevski who weighed 164 ?. That was on June 30, 2010.

However, on April 23, 2010 Dulog who won by a 4th round TKO over Anthony Brownlie weighed 145 pounds while Brownlie was 146 ?.

The weight discrepancies and the fact that the Filipino boxers are made to fight month after month at widely different weights demonstrates the exploitation of these boxers on the one hand and the utter incompetence or callousness of Australian boxing authorities.
