
EX LT. FLY CHAMP SOSA MOVES UP, WINS AS A FLYWEIGHT

Former WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa who lost his world title to Filipino Rodel Mayol by a controversial second round TKO after he was groggy following a nasty head-butt which resulted in a fractured cheekbone has comeback as a flyweight and scored an impressive 4th round TKO over Venezuela?s Jose Luis Varela.
Mayol subsequently lost the title to another Mexican, former champion Omar Nino Romero in a twelve round decision.
Sosa who had vowed to win by a knockout didn?t let his fans down, dominating Varela from the opening bell.
The 30 year old Sosa dropped the game 31 year old Venezuelan in the third and fourth rounds and although Varela beat the count for the second time , Sosa went after him with a flurry of punches forcing referee Jose Guadalupe Garcia to call a halt at 1:33 of the fourth round. It was only the second time in his career that Varela was stopped.
With the win Sosa improved his record to 39-6 with 23 knockouts while Varela fell to 15-8 with 7 knockouts.
The manager of Sosa noted in a post fight interview that even as a flyweight Sosa was ?very strong and with a couple of fights under his belt Edgar will be positioned to challenge for the world title next year.?
