Former world champion Jose Luis Castillo, the 36 year old Mexican welterweight continues his comeback bid following a bad beating at the hands of Alfonso Gomez in a WBC Continental Americas title fight when he retired in the sixth round last March 16.
Following that one-sided beating Castillo announced his retirement but changed his mind, returned to the ring last June 18 and won an eight round unanimous decision over 37 year old Roberto Valenzuela who had a record of 51-52 with 42 knockouts but had also been stopped no less than 25 times.
In his second comeback fight on Sunday, Manila Time, Castillo will face Daniel Eduardo Yocupicio who has lost his last four fights, two by knockouts and will enter the ring with a far from impressive record of 4-12-2 with no knockouts but 6 losses by knockout.
Yocupicio nicknamed ?Spaghetti? lost his last by a 2nd round knockout to undefeated Juan Pablo Lopez who has an impressive record of 14 knockouts in 15 wins on April 10 this year.
Although he faces a mediocre opponent at best, boxingscene.com quoted Castillo as saying he believes he ?can still be in the limelight of boxing so I decided to take this final stretch. I surrendered myself completely to the gym and I felt great."
In another fight on the same card at the Hector Espino Stadium in Jalisco, former WBO straw weight champion Manuel "Chango" Vargas faces Michael Arango in a ten round super flyweight bout.
The 29 year old Vargas who has a record of 27-5-1 with 12 knockouts dropped a split decision to WBO minimum weight champion Donnie Nietes of the ALA Gym on September 12, 2009 in Mexico and was then knocked out in the 3rd round by WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire on February 13, 2010 at the Las Vegas Hilton in a ?Pinoy Power/Latin Fury? card of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.
Vargas is coming off a 1st round TKO win over Ricardo Armenta in a scheduled eight round bout last July 2Febriary 13. However, Armenta had lost six of his seven previous bouts before facing Vargas.
Vargas will clash with Colombia?s 31 year old Michael Arango who has a record of 30-8-3 with 24 knockouts. Arango lost by a 1nd round TKO to Ramon Garcia Hirales in a WBC International light flyweight title fight on February 13, 2010 but came back with an eight round decision over Alfonso De La Hoz on April 15, 2010.
Vargas continues to hope for a world title shot and a story on boxingscene.com quoted Vargas as saying his fight against Arango "is complicated, but I am prepared to for whatever, because this will prepare me for the world title at flyweight."
