Marc Jonathan de Jesus.
Fil-Am Marc Jonathan de Jesus of Fullerton, CA and Cagayan and Munoz in the Philippines, won the highly acclaimed Canon and Vimeo filmmaking contest 'The Story Beyond The Still' said to be the largest collaborative film effort in history.
The objective of the contest is to take a still photograph provided by Canon, interpret a story about it and make a 4 minute film about it. The competition is divided up into 7 4-minute chapters or rounds. The first chapter was done by Pulitzer Prize winner Vincent LaFloret who also sit as one of the judges. His 4-minute film ended with a still photo, which the next filmmaker went on to make his own 4-minute film and so on. The current entries are now for Chapter 6.
De Jesus' entry for Chapter 6 'Fool Circle' was one of the five finalists selected by a 9-member panel of judges which included Hollywood legends Rick McCallum, the Producer of the Star Wars Movies' Episodes I-III, Russell Carpenter, the Academy Award Winning Cinematographer of "Titanic" and Rodney Charters, Director of Photography on "24".
The top prize however had to be won by popular vote similar to the 'American Idol' contest. De Jesus, a long time Pacland member, reached out to his fellow Paclanders last Thursday for help. The more than 50,000 strong Pacland online community, who had been instrumental in helping Manny Pacquiao and other Filipino personalities emerged on top if online voting was required, did not disappoint one of their Pacland brothers.
De Jesus, the first Filipino filmmaker to win in such a prestigious contest, may be in for bigger things as a filmmaker. Aside from winning a brand new Canon high end camera and lens, De Jesus is set to do a collaborative work with highly-acclaimed director Vincent Laforet.
Once the 7-chapter collaborative project has been completed, it will be entered into major film festivals around the world including the Academy awards. Previous "The Story Beyond The Still" winners had already won Gold & Silver Lions at Cannes.
