Newly crowned WBC light flyweight champion Omar Nino Romero who won the title from the Philippines Rodel Mayol has received his World Boxing Council?s coveted green and gold belt from secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman.
Also receiving her WBC belt at a ceremony at the Hotel Geneve in Mexico City was Irma ?La Guerita? Sanchez.
Omar Nino Romero is scheduled to defend his title on September 4 in Jalisco, Mexico but the challenger hasn?t been named as yet. Sanchez is scheduled to battle Japan?s Naomi Togashi on the same card.
Mayol lost his title in a rematch in which referee Hector Afu deducted three points from Mayol for head-butts which cut Omar Nino Romero on both eyebrows.
While there is a possibility of a trilogy because of the controversy generated in their first two fights.
Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz who was at ringside for the title fight told us then that the point deductions were in keeping with the new WBC rules on head-butts told us in a post-fight interview from Mexico that a third fight ?is a possibility because we have a good relationship with Omar Nino?s people so its a great possibility.?
However, Koncz who handles Mayol for Pacquiao and his MP Promotions said they want to? take one step at a time and get another win under our belt. We are not going to get an immediate rematch.?
The Pacquiao adviser said Mayol received one head-butt and he (Koncz) ?tried to argue with Sulaiman for a point deduction but the problem was there was no cut and therefore the rule didn?t apply.? Under the rules a fighter has to be cut by a head-butt for a point to be deducted from his opponent.
Koncz said they had no complaints and conceded that Omar Nino was the "better man tonight" and finished stronger in the championship rounds where Mayol didn't throw too many punches.
