Miles Delmindo.
A promising 15 year old Fil-Am amateur boxer Miles Delmindo is keen on joining the Philippine Team vying for a berth in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Miles and his father Mario Delmindo left for the US on Monday after a visit to the Philippines with Miles getting a chance to show what he?s got in a sparring session with 18 year old Dennis Galvan who is reportedly a senior member of the national pool of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.
The father of Miles told us ?the sparring went well and coach Pat Gaspi liked what he saw? although he realizes that since Miles is only 15 he ?needs to develop more speed and strength.?
Mario Delmindo said he would work on getting his son dual citizenship so he could represent the Philippines in international tournaments such as the Asian Games and hopefully the Olympics.
The teenaged boxer?s father said Miles had ?a limited amateur experience? in actual competition but does have ?an incredible amount of experience in sparring over 500 rounds against significantly experienced fighters.?
Miles who stands almost 6 feet and weighs around 147 pounds is the youngest fighter in the Sweet Science Boxing Gym in Hilliard , Ohio ( Columbus suburb) and his trainer is Russ Niggemyer (undefeated pro middle weight). Miles will be a sophomore at Watkins Memorial High School , in Pataskala , Ohio.
Miles has a record of 1-1 with his win coming by way of a TKO or Referee Stopped Contest in amateur boxing parlance. The lanky, bespectacled boxer looks a little like young pro sensation Jesus Benavidez . He trains 3 to 4 times a week for about two hours each session and spars a few rounds at a time, once or twice a week.
His father says Miles ?eats a balanced diet and is very disciplined with boxing his number one priority. Everything else is second in terms of his activities.?
Both father and son watched the finals of the inaugural MVP Cup International Invitational at the PICC last Sunday and enjoyed the fights. They liked female flyweight gold medalists Annie Albania and Nesty Petecio and of course Charly Suarez who beat the Athens 2004 Olympic silver medalist Worapoj Petchikoom 7-4 to win the gold medal while they said Delfin Boholst, another gold medal winner who edged his fancied Thai opponent Apichet Saensit ?had tons of heart.?
Mario Delmindo said they plan to return in July next year and his dream is for Miles to represent the Philippines in the Olympics and to win a gold medal.
