DONAIRE DEFENDS WBA INTERIM BELT WITH 8TH ROUND KO OVER MARQUEZ

Ring Magazine's No. 4 Pound-for-Pound boxer on the planet Nonito Donaire, Jr. of the Philippines successfully defended his WBA Interim Super Flyweight Title by knocking out Hernan Marquez of Sonora, Mexico in the 8th round at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico moments ago.
The overmatched Marquez was hit with a lethal counter left to the jaw by Donaire and although Marquez beat the count the referee stopped the contest. Marquez also went to the canvas earlier in the contest.
Donaire, who has been wanting to face a 'real' opponent after knocking out Vic Darchinyan of Australia in 2007, may finally meet the elite fighters in the bantamweight division including Fernando Montiel and Jorge Arce as he is set to move to a higher weight. Donaire has now a record of 24-1-0 with 16 knockouts.
