Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico came back strong after an early round beating to knock out Eden Sonsona of Philippines in the 9th round at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico moments ago.

After a close first and second rounds, Sonsona took the third, fourth and fifth rounds decisively catching Oquendo with powerful rights and lefts where Oquendo appeared ready to be taken out. In the closing seconds of the 5th round however, Sonsona appeared to have gassed out after Oquendo refused to go down.

In the 6th round, Oquendo came alive as Sonsona was tiring and dictated the tempo of the round. In the 7th round Oquendo caught Sonsona with a low blow as the two fighters went toe to toe with each one of them had their moments in the most exciting round of the fight thus far.

A headbutt by Sonsona opened the 8th round and cost Sonsona a point after he was warned with similar headbutts in the 4th and 5th rounds. Oquendo threw a low-blow in return. After another low blow by Oquendo, he was also deducted a point as the 8th round developed into tug or war of head butts and low blows. Towards the end of the 8th round Oquendo caught Sonsona with a clean right straight that sent Sonsona to the canvas for the count. Although Sonsona beat the count he appeared to have not fully recovered from the knock down as the bell rings.

Oquendo came out strong in the 9th round looking to finish off Sonsona where he finally caught the Filipino with a short right sending Sonsona down and finally out at 1:09 of the round.
