World Boxing Council secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman was impressed with the newest Filipino fighter to make an impact on Mexican fight fans in Mexico, flyweight Edren Dapudong.
Dapudong who returned home with his manager, former North Cotabato governor and media man Manny Pinol in time to celebrate Dapudong?s 24th birthday on Saturday, scored a spectacular 1st round knockout of highly-fancied Mexican Jesus ?The Destroyer? Jimenez the previous Sunday in the picturesque province of Nayarit.
Jimenez had a record of 20 knockouts in 28 wins with 5 losses and was regarded as a powerful puncher and an aggressive ring warrior but Dapudong never gave him a chance to settle down. The hard-hitting Filipino dropped Jimenez with a vicious left in the opening round that reportedly broke Jimenez? jaw and then dropped him for the second time with another devastating shot to the body to end the bout at 2:52 of the first round.
The Dapudong-Jimenez fight is scheduled to be telecast on ABS-CBN's Studio 23 on Saturday, July 4.
The hardworking WBC secretary general was elated over the performance of Dapudong who carries the name of the ?Brave Heart? Gym of Pinol with distinction. Sulaiman told us ?Wow! The new silver world champion in the flyweight division was so impressive!!!!!!?
Sulaiman requested us to find out from governor Pinol whether Dapudong prefers to fight as a a flyweight or a light flyweight.
Although Pinol wanted to first settle down and look at the options he told us Dapudong would have no problem fighting either at 108 or 112.
Should he decide to go after the flyweight title he would have to contend with Thai veteran Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. However, if he drops to light flyweight a title fight against newly crowned WBC champion Omar Nino would be a big draw especially in Mexico following Nino?s recent triumph over the Philippines? Rodel Mayol in their return bout after what some Mexican fight fans and media felt was a controversial decision in their first title clash which ended in a third round draw last February 27.
Omar Nino bucked cuts over both eyes in a tough rematch to win the title from a fading Mayol. Sulaiman himself said Mayol ?looked very good the first five rounds but Nino was very brave and continued even though he was all bloodied and it seems Mayol got discouraged.? Mayol, according to Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz was deducted three points because of head-butts in which Koncz said the referee was correct.
Sulaiman commended Mayol as ?a very good fighter? but added, ?he was not there that night.? At the same time he told us that a third fight between Mayol and Omar Nino is quite possible.
Koncz indicated the plan is to give Mayol another fight before discussing a third fight with Omar Nino.
