Tension is reportedly building up in the camps of WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayold and former champion and challenger Omar Nino after the Mexican?s manager accused Team Mayol of being cheats at a rules meeting following the official weigh-in, Saturday.
Mayol who retained his title after the WBC and its secretary general Maurico Sulaiman ruled their February 27 title fight was a draw or a no contest after Nino hit Mayol with a clear low blow and as referee Vic Drackulich shouted and moved in to stop the action and give Mayol time to recover as provided by the rules, the Mexican challenger cracked him with a left hook and knocked him out cold.
The Omar Nino camp claimed that Mayol feigned hurt and should have gotten up and continued to fight sparking a heated exchange between both camps according to cut-man Dr. Ed de la Vega before Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz stepped in and cooled things off.
The Mexican media has hyped the controversy with Omar Nino even claiming that he needs to win by a knockout since Mayol is handled by pound-for-pound king and ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao, insinuating that Pacquiao?s stature could influence the judges decision.
Mayol continues to effectively ignore the accusations of the Omar Nino camp and said ?I'm counting the hours until I face Nino in the ring. I will provide a great fight and go back to the Philippines with my belt."
Mayol was besieged by fans asking for his autograph at a public workout in a ring mounted on the Independence of Colonial Gardens in the attractive town where their rematch will take place in the Campus Plaza de Toros on Sunday, Manila Time.
Minutes after his arrival Omar Nino received a standing ovation and the Mexican challenger made only slight shadow exercises and later attended a function where dozens of people were waiting to get signed autographs and took pictures.
"I feel great and the weight is no problem. We are ready to climb into the ring for Mexico to recover what belongs to me, the world title."
The World Boxing Council, chaired by Don Jose Sulaiman was appointed as supervisor of the flyweight title fight with Mike George of the United States, Panama's Hector Afu is the referee and the judges are Samuel Conde of Puerto Rico, U.S. Daniel Mendoza and Harold Lawrence of Cura?ao.
