Former world light flyweight champion Omar Nino continues to up the rhetoric prior to his title rematch against WBC champion Rodel Mayol even as the Mexican media peddle the alleged innocence of Nino in their February 27 clash which was declared a technical draw by WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman and the committee at ringside.
Omar Nino hit Mayol with a clear low blow and as referee Vic Drackulich lunged forward to stop the action and give Mayol time to recover, Nino nailed him with a vicious left hook that knocked Mayol out cold.
After some confusion Sulaiman who spoke to Drakulich about the sequence of events and based on WBC rules declared the fight a technical draw. The decision meant Mayol retained his title and Nino went home empty handed, sparking a controversy as fans thought initially that Nino won by knockout.
In an effort to clear Nino of any illegal action the media claimed that after Mayol complained of a low blow and the Mexican "saw no intervention by the referee finished off Mayol to score a knockout."
That version was completely belied by the television footage which clearly showed the low blow and Drackulich shouting and moving in to stop the action when Nino unloaded a big punch.
At a final pre-fight press conference Mayol confronted the issue saying "I know Omar Nino told the media that I had won with help, but I have nothing to do with the rules. What happened was an accident, and it's now in the past and what's important is the fight this Saturday. I am much better prepared and I have no doubt I will win and it will be a great show for the public."
Nino also insinuated that since Mayol is managed by pound-for-pound king and ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao who recently received a fabulous welcome during a brief vacation in Nayarit, Mexico he would have to knock Mayol out to win and not depend on the judges.
Mayol responded by pointing out that "Manny has nothing to do with the outcome of my fights with (Edgar) Sosa and Nino. Manny is not up in the ring. I am the one who goes in there to fight the opponent. Manny is only my manager."
Mayol won the title with a stunning 2nd round TKO of favored champion Edgar Sosa also in a controversial ending. An accidental head-butt by Mayol in the first round sent a groggy Sosa to the canvas.
Sensing he was in trouble Mayol went after Sosa in round two and pinned him against the ropes with a series of punches, forcing the referee to intervene and call a halt to the fight. It was later discovered that the head-butt had caused a fracture on Sosa?s left cheekbone and forced him to take a six month break.
Omar Nino continued to assail Mayol saying that he will take care of the "cunning tricks" of Mayol and will be champion by winning a title that he claims, belongs to him.
Nino said "Everyone knows how to fight Mayol and this time I am taking no chances to allow them to use their cunning tricks. The belt stays in Mexico no matter what. Viva Mexico," yelled Ni?o and as he led the applause of those present at the news conference.
