Philippine-Mexican rivalry has been hyped to the hilt as WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol prepares for his title rematch with former world champion Omar Nino in the San Juan del Rio, Queretaro bullring on Sunday, Manila Time.
Mexican media have used the controversial ending to their first fight as a talking point in the buildup after Omar Nino hit Mayol with a clear low blow and as referee Vic Drakulich moved in cracked Mayol with a vicious left hook that knocked Mayol out cold.
Mexican fans celebrated thinking that Omar Nino had won by a knockout but WBC secretary general Maurico Sulaiman and his executive committee at ringside consulted Drakulich and then announced the fight was a draw or effectively a no decision which enabled Mayol to retain his title.
Mayol won the title with a stunning 2nd round TKO over longtime champion Edgar Sosa also in somewhat controversial fashion. An accidental head-butt in round one had Sosa groggy as he dropped to his knees. Mayol sensed the champion was in trouble and pinned him against the ropes at the start of the second round with a flurry of punches forcing the referee to call a halt.
In a post fight medical it was discovered that Sosa had a fractured left cheekbone as a result of the Mayol head-butt forcing Sosa to take a six month break.
The WBC informed us that a full house is expected for the fight which could be seen on the WBC boxing.tv internet site ?live?. It will also be aired by Fox Sports in the US and TV Azteca in Mexico
Mayol has been in Mexico since the last weekend and a report from the WBC indicated the Filipino champion showed speed and defensive skills in a workout at his hotel.
Mayol said ?I am more than ready. I prepared much better than the last time. I am desperate to climb into the ring and show everybody that I am the champion.?
Referring to their controversial showdown last February 27, Mayol said ?I did not want that ending. I was winning the fight but the Mexican gave me an illegal punch. I was helpless. Fortunately the referee saw the punch and stuck to the rules.?
Scoffing at claims by Omar Nino that he would win the title by a knockout Mayol replied ?I will confirm this Saturday that I am superior and will return with the belt to the Philippines.?
Mayol belongs to a roster of fighters being handled by pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao who recently received a fantastic welcome during a brief vacation with his family as the guest of well known Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran and governor Ney Gonzalez of the beautiful tourist resort of Nayarit province.
