THE BEST and the brightest mental athletes will gather for the tough and prestigious event of this year?s World Memory Championships slated on August 21 to 27 at the Baiyun International Convention Center, Guangzhou, China.

The Filipino tandem of Robert Racasa, a former top board player of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Chess Team, and Johann Randall P. Abrina, a Sports Science graduate of UP Diliman, are now steep into their ten weeks preparation to make such great aspirations possible.

?Our Primary goal for the 2010 WMC is to get the GM title. To break into the top ten or even winning the whole thing may seem unrealistic, especially for first time participants like us. But we like to set lofty goals for ourselves. They say that if you reach for the stars and fail, you fall on the moon. The GM title will definitely be our moon...? said by the optimistic Abrina on their goal for the 2010 WMC and the possibility of facing very stiff international competition.

?Well, would just like to do our best and show the whole world that the Filipino mind is at par with the world?s best. Manny Pacquiao is doing a great job of representing the Philippines in boxing; we?re aiming to do the same in memory sports?? added Racasa.

Given the amount of advantage of the International competition the pair will be facing and the current of state of Philippine sports today, they will be having a very rough road ahead them.

?Well, it will all depend on our preparation. These competitors were doing this for almost 2 decades now; they had a very long head start. So, we really need all the support we could get.? He added.

In preparation for the big event, the team uses software-made tests and exercises. Since the mind sports is new, finding ways to train oneself is hard because they have to be resourceful, inventive, and determined to win.

The competition is founded to challenge the limits of human memory; several tests are given to the participants like binary digits, numbers, spoken numbers, speed cards, cards, random words, historic/future dates, names and faces, and abstract images. Winner will be titled as Grand Master of Memory.

To date, the team backed up by Filway Marketings Inc. CEO/ President Hector "Chito" Tagaysay is in need of additional financial aid to defray their preparation materials and accommodation in the actual event set in August, the venue of this year?s Asian Games.

RP Delegation Head/ Coach is RP and US chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
