75 climbers start trekking to Mt. Apo today

SEVENTY-FIVE climbers from all over the country will start trekking today, February 19, Thursday at the highest peak Mt. Apo in the Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

It is part of the two events - 5th Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines Inc. [MFPI] Mindanao Summit set February 19 to 21.

They are expected to start trekking at 7 a.m. and will have Camp 1 at Tinikaran.

They will be led by Clyde Ginco while the sweeper is Voltaire Lopez.

The guides and PDRRMO Rescue team are also composed of Ryan Adalim, Angel Arcala, Domvir Buaya, Myla Chuan, Elvis Cabunilas, Promil Diones, Elmer Villas, Anthony Rufin, Roel Dela Cruz, Angelo Razon, Khid Diaz and Jun Leon.

“I'm a little nervous, I can't sleep because many people arrive until dusk but it's ok,” said Rowena “Weng” Pacaldo, president of CARE Group.

CARE Group Davao Sur Mountaineering Club is hosting this event with MFPI in partnership with the Local Government of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

“I'm very happy that many people supported the event LuzViMinda”, said Pacaldo.

Meanwhile, the other event is a Basic Mountaineering Course [BMC] starts today, February 19 to 22 at the Bagobo-Tagabawa Cultural Village in Tibolo, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Rey A. Zetha and Jun Kenneth B. Ciriaco of the Earth Island Outdoor Environment Club Inc. [EIOEC] will conduct the topics:

1. Introduction/History

2. Planning and Preparation

3. Mountaineering Equipment/Backpacking

4. Weatherproofing and Pack Loading

5. Trekking/Trail Manners and Water Management / Water Discipline

6. Camp Management/Campsite Selection

7. Weather Prediction

8. Do’s and Don’ts

9. Basic Ropemanship and knot tying

10. Land Navigation and compass reading

11. Gender and cultural Sensitivity

12. Biodiversity
