Former World 9-Ball pool champion Efren ?Bata? Reyes has been elevated to the national playing-coach status starting with the coming Asian Games in November in Guangzhou, China.
National head coach Boyet Asonto announced during yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session that as playing-coach, Reyes, the reigning world 9-ball mixed-doubles champion in a team up with the first Filipina world singles titleholder Rubilen Amit, will help in overseeing the Billiards and Snooker Council of the Philippines? series of tryouts that will determine the national squads for the 16th edition of the Asiad.
Reyes though has been seeded to the RP Men?s English Billiards squad along with Rey Grandea, according to Asonto in the forum, sponsored by ACCEL.
Tryouts for the men?s 8-ball singles, 8-ball singles, carom cushion singles snooker singles and snooker singles and the women?s 9-ball singles, 8-ball singles snooker 6 red balls singles and snooker 6 red balls team will be held as soon as the BSCP request for the reopening of the venue inside the Philippine Sports Medicine building is approved.
Asonto said.
Reyes, for his part, stressed no one will be seeded in the teams, both in the men?s and women?s sides owing to the many world-caliber players the country has.
?Halos lahat naman ng mga players natin ngayon, magagaling na kaya in fairness sa kanila,. kailangan mag-tryout. Pati nga ako magta-tryout sa ibang event maliban sa English Billiards, ? the local pool legend who was guest at the forum along with national training pool members and themselves former national players Iris Ranola and Mary Ann Basas, said.
Also seeded in the women?s English billiards squad are Amit and Ranola with Basas being a cinch in the 6 red balls singles. A total of seven players will be allotted to the men?s squad, while six will make up the women?s side.
Reyes said that both teams that will be formed are capable of bringing home gold medals although adding that competitions in the women?s side will be tougher thatn the men?s play because of the presence of equally talented campaigners from Korea, China, Taipei and Japan, among others.
?Medyo mabigat ang laban ng mga babae natin. pero ang lalake, mas madali kasi Taipei lang and dapat bantayan,? Reyes, who will be flying to Japan next week for a three-week playing and teaching stints, assessed.
