Twenty seven national sports associations had, until yesterday, submitted their lists of candidates for membership in the national delegation to the coming Asian Games this November in Guangzhou, China.
This was announced yesterday by POC spokesperson Joey Romasanta during the SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session. Romasanta is the head of the special working group that is overseeing the selection of the 35 teams that will carry the country?s colors in the 16th edition of the q2uadrennhial meet.
Romasanta?s group actually set Feb. 15 as deadline for the submission of the list that will form the national training pool from where the final Asia entries will come from.
?We extended the deadline up to today, the last day of the week. By Monday, we expect to all the NSA concerned to have complied with our requirements,? Romasanta said during the forum, sponsored by ACCEL.
Romasanta, also the RP chief of mission to the Asiad, expressed elation to what he said encouraging response the NSAs even as he thanked and commended those concerned.
The NSAs which had submitted their lists are aquatics, archery, athletics, baseball, billiards, boxing, judo, karatedo, rowing, shooting, wrestling, weightlifting, triathlon, lawn tennis, taekwondo, table tennis, squash, softball, gymnastics, golf, fencing, equestrian, dance sports, cycling, canoe-kayak, dragon boat and badminton.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas had not yet submitted its list but Romasanta said, his group, whose membershsipo also includes Benjamin Espiritu, Moying Martelino, Mario Tanchangco, Go Teng Ko and Jeff Tamayo, the Smart-Gilas squad is considered submitted.
Among those whose list are being awaited are wushu, chess, dragonboat, soft tennis, squash, sepak takraw, volleyball and football.
Romasanta added athletes included in the list will be continuously evaluated within the next six months before the country submits the entries by names in August.
?We?d like to level the playing field within that time frame so that the athletes will have equal chances of qualifying to the Asian Games,? Romasanta said, warning that NSAs should not to include athletes in the training pool for the sake of ?getting exposures? and instead, field in those who have the best potentials to win.
?In our country, the measurement of a successful participation depends on the total number of medals the RP team won. I told the NSA heads that if they think that if some of their players are not capable of winning, they should not include it in the list because it might just jeopardize the whole performance of the team,? Romasanta said in Filipino.
There would be 42 sports lined up in Guangzhou, but the country will be participating in 35 sports. In the 2006 Doha Asiad, the country sent 233 athletes and won only four gold, six silver and nine bronze medals coming from boxing, billiards, wushu, karatedo, golf, taekwondo and tennis.
