Asian Triathlon and Manila 5000 Updates from SCOOP

An extensive training program designed to prepare them for this year?s Asian Games and the Asian Beach Games awaits triathletes Lea Coline Langit. Kim Mangrobang and Neil Catiil.
Triathlon Association of the Philippines president Tom Carrasco yesterday announced that the three will be sent to to the different triathlon capitals of the world as per agreement between his association and the Philippine Sports Commission.
Langit, he said during yesterday?s ACCEL-sponsored SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session, will be sent to New Zealand and will be training under an Australian coach Rob Piccard, while Mangrobang, only 18 from Laguna, is scheduled to attend the International Triathlon Union training camp in Hungary besides fielding them in the premium tournaments in Asia.
Catiil, Carrasco added, is set to fly to Phukit in Thailand besides earning a training stint in Switzerland under Brett Sutton and national mentor Melvin Fausto. Build up program in Japan and Korea has also been worked out.
?These international exposures will take effect in March,? Carrasco said, adding that the three will start receiving their month stipend of P15,000 this month as promised by PSC chair Harry Angping.
Carrasco said Langit, the most experienced of the three having represented the country in the 2006 Doha Asiad where she ended up 11th, is the sport?s brightest hope of landing a medal.
Carrasco did not say how much is the training budget approved by the PSC, adding though that 50 percent will be shouldered by the government agency and the other half to be provided by the sponsoring Sunkist and Vitwater, both products of RFM Corp.
?We have also formed our training pool pursuant to the directive of the Philippine Olympic Committee, Carracso said. ? And by Monday members of the pool will start getting their P15,000 monthly allowance.?
Mangrobang, is to be remembered as to have won Asian Junior Duathlon Championships held in Mekong last year, while Catiil, from Cagayan de Oro, captured the ITU Triathlon crown in Singapore the same year.
Catiil, meanwhile, will join foreign and local elite athletes under Australian Brett Sutton and RP coach Melvin Fausto, where they will train in Phuket, Thailand in March, Switzerland in May and Japan and Korea a few months before the Asiad.
?Our athletes have a full training schedule for the Asian Games and the PSC has already approved our training budget. We are optimistic of our participation in Guangzhou,? Carrasco said.
?A lot of improvements have been made on their trainings. There was no triathlon at the Southeast Asian Games in Laos last year, but out athletes continuously training and competed in different international tournaments abroad,? he added.
Manila 5000
The First Manila 5000 Run, a race aimed at elevating the standard of road racing in the country, unfurls March 14 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines ground.
Covering 5 kilometers in distance or 5,000 meters over an out-and-back course (starting and finishing at the CCP compound), the race is the maiden event held under the auspices of the recently-established Road Racing Events, a one-stop race management and equipment rental outfit
Veteran internationalist Dino Jose, RRE managing director and race organizer, said his outfit also aims to improving the level of performance of Filipino runners.
?This is the reason why we are starting with the 5,000-meter event, the shortest road race which has an equivalent Olympic event held in the oval,? Jose said during yesterday?s ACCEL-sponsored SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session.
Race consultant is Red Dumuk, veteran marathon organizer who contributed to the success of the Manila International Marathon, Manila International 20K and an ex-race race director of the Milo Marathon. Manila 5000 has two divisions ? elite or exclusively to runners with personal best sub-20-minute clocking and open, which caters to runners of various fitness levels.
Winner of the Elit level gets P5,000 with the runnerup and third placer winning P2,500 and P1,500.
Prices in the open race are P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 to the men and women podium finishers. All winners get a trophy each.
Entry fee is P350, entitling participants to a jersey and certificate of achievement. Registration is going-on at the second floor of the PSC administration building at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
