There will be no criteria to be followed in the selection as to who will represent the country in this year?s Asian Games this November in Guangzhou. The seven-man working group, formed recently by the Philippine Olympic Committee to devise means for the selection, is giving the national sports associations whose sports are in the calendar of the 16th edition of the quadrennial conclave, a free hand in recommending membership in the national pool of their respective sports from where their teams will come from.
In fact, if the working group will have its way, the national training pool will have to be formed no later than middle of this month. Two members of the working group ? Mario Tanchangco and Mauricio?Moying? Martelino ? yesterday announced that their group, chaired by POC media relations man Joey Romasanta, had set the deadline for the different national sports associations to submit their recommendations for membership in their respective pool on Feb. 15.
?This is in line with the POC?s desire to form the teams that will carry the country?s colors in the Asian Games slated November no later than August,? Martelino said during the SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.
?There will be no extension,? Martelino assured during the forum, sponsored by ACCEL. ?The plan is by the end of August, all teams competing in the Asiad should already be formed to allow our athletes to start their extensive preparations that early.?
The idea, he said, is to form the delegation early and avoid the usual cramming that marked the formation of the national teams in previous multi events the country participated in as the Olympic Games, Asiad and Southeast Asian Games.
Between February and August, a team which will be formed soon to monitor the preparations being undertaken by members of the national pool in a regular quarterly basis. Those finally selected will then be submitted to Romasanta, who besides heading the working group has also been named the chef de mission of the RP Asian contingent.
Tanchangco explained that this new set up, a diversion from the usual practice of having a task force to decide membership in the national pool, is being implemented to avoid the controversies that existed in previous selection process.
?Let?s face it, sino ba ang mas nakakaalam kung sino ang dapat maging member ng national teams, kung hindi ang mga NSA presidents?? Martelino said by way of adding to the explanation of Tanchangco, who was the chief of mission in the recent 25th SEA Games in Laos.
Tanchangco said though that in the absence of criteria, several suggestions have been submitted to guide the NSAs in setting their training pool in place, adding that these will not necessarily be the main basis of the selection.
To be considered are the SEA Games gold medallists, medallists in the 2006 Asiad, athletes? performance in the Beijing Olympics, results in the world, continental and high category international competitions and other identified young and promising talents.
Also to be considered are athletes who qualified in sports where there are qualifying competitions.
