There?s no substitute to early preparations.

With this in mind, the Philippine Olympic Committee is calling on all national sports associations whose sports will be played in this year?s Asia Games to submit their plans as to their athletes? preparations for the coming quadrennial conclave set in November in Guangzhou, China.

Soft tennis associrtion president Jeff Tamayo yesterday revealed that all NSA concerned will have to submit their respective recommendations, including, if possible, the composition of their teams the soonest possible time for evaluation of a special committee to be headed by the POC spokesperson Joey Romasanta who was named the Asiad delegation chef de mission.

For a start, Tamayo said during yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura, that Romasanta will be meeting all the former chef de mission of the previous national contingents within next week for the purpose of obtaining inputs as to what the requirements are in the formation of a strong representation.

?Mr. Romasanta was also given a free hand in choosing who will be the member of that special committee which will be tasked to oversee preparations, including the criteria for the selection? Tamayo told members of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines during the public service forum, sponsored by ACCEL.

The Filipino athletes won four gold medals in the last edition of the Games in Doha Qatar, courtesy of boxing, billiards and wushu.

The Asian Games is one of the three major international meets the country is committed to participate this year the others being the First Youth Olympic Games middle of the year in Singapore and the Second Asian Beach Games in December in Oman.

Swimming president Mark Joseph has been designated the chief of mission for the YOG, while Tamayo himself was named to oversee participation in the Asian beach Games.

Tamayo said 11 sports will be disputed in the Oman Games, eight less than that conbested the first edition in Bali, Indonesia.

Tamayo could not yet announce what sports the Philippines will take part in and what criteria will be used for the selection of teams although Marcus Valda, vice president of the Weightlifting Association of the Philippines, who was also a guest in the SCOOP sesson, assured that his association will participate.

Valda, a bemedalled grappler himself, said the team that brought home three gold medals, two silver and four bronze medals in the recent 25th Southeast Asian Games will form the core of the wrestling squads to both the Asian Games and the ABG.
Valda singled out Jason Balabal, a youthful discovery from Ifugao and Margarito Angana as cinch to make it to the team to both conclaves.

?Both Jason and Margarito have shown marked improvement as in their style and fighting form and I?m sure they will; give a good account of themselves in both the Asiad and ABG,? Valda, spearhead of the country?s eight gold-medal harvest in the 2003 and 2005 SEA Games said.

Like Valda, Tamayo said soft tennis will probably sent the same team that won a bronze medal in the last Asian soft tennis championships.
