
Biggest multi-event sports meet set

What could be the biggest gathering of athletes in the tertiary level unfurls Feb. 22-28 with the staging of the CHED (Commission on Education) National Games at the historic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
A total 6,171 athletes representing the three biggest private public educational institutions will see action in this integrated sports development program involving, for the first time, the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA), the State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association and the Local Colleges and Universities Athletic Association.
These schools sports organization have student population of 2.6 million and 500,000 faculty members where enormous athletic talents abounds which the Games conclave intends to discover and develop to become members of the national delegations for future international competitions.
?For the first time in 15 years, CHED has finally succeeded in convincing the PRISAA, SCUAA and LCUAA to come together and put up a sports development program that will cater to the needs of our national teams for future international competitions,? lawyer Emmanuel Angeles, chairman of CHED, said by way of announcing the program during a press briefing yesterday at the Philippine Sports Commission board room.
?It is our sincerest desire that higher educational institutions all over the country will join in promoting sports among the youth of our studentry,? Angeles said.
No less than President Macapagal-Arroyo has been invited to grace in the Olympic-style opening ceremony scheduled in the afternoon of Feb., 22, Angeles, who is also the president of the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association and the Angeles University Foundation said.
Eighteen events, seven in team sports and 11 in individual disciplines will be on tap. These are baseball, basketball for men and women, beach volleyball for men and women, football, sepak takraw, softball for men and women volleyball for men and women, athletics, badminton, boxing, dance sports judo, karate-do, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and tennis.
Besides the Rizal memorial Sports Complex, competitions will also be held at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City, University of the East, ULTRA, also in Pasig, Rizal Technological University in Mandaluyong City, Rosario Sports Complex, in Pasig, University of the Philippines and Mandaluyong City Boxing Gym,
To add prestige and glitter in the competitions, members of the national teams in the different sports are eligible to participate
Athletes and officials are to be billeted at the facilities of PRISAA, SCUAA and LCUAA member schools.
There will be no overall championship to be disputed although medal counts will be used to determine the unofficial team standing.
With Angeles during the press briefing were PRISAA president Gduque, SCUAA president, Dr. Lauro Tagbas, CHED executive director Julito V ,national Games executive secretary Laureano Santos and Prof Robert Calo, National Games Vice chairman.
