If the fight will be held today, the World Boxing Organization minimumweight crown will stay on the head of Filipino Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes.
This, Nietes assured yesterday during the SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura where her and trainer Franklin Albia pronounced the boxer ready for his title confrontation with Mexican challenger Jesus Silvestre.
?I?m ready and raring to fight and even if the fight will be held tonight, I?m sure I?ll keep the title,? Nietes told members of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines in the forum, sponsored by ACCEL.
The 30-year-old Cebu based boxer even predicted the round he will knockout the title contender, who, he said, he?ll send to dreamland between the fifth and seventh rounds.
?Hindi tatagal ng pitong round yan,? (He will not last beyond seven rounds.) Nietes, owner of an impressive 25-1-3 win-loss-draw record, 14 of them via stoppage, said of his challenger whose record 15-1 with 12 KOs looks formidable, too.
The Nietes- Silvestre 12-round tiff serves as undercard of the Brian Viloria-Carlos Tamara International Boxing Federation junior-flyweight main event of a card dubbed ?Boxing at the Bay? set Jan. 23 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
?Napag-aralan na namin ang style nya sa tapes ng mga laban nya at tingin ko maraming weakness. Kaya kahit na maganda rin ang record nya, kayang patumbahin? Nietes, who will be staking his crown for the fourth time since taking it from Thai Karating Daenggym in 2007, said.
(I have studied tapes of his fights and I see many weaknesses. Even if he has a good record, I can knock him out.)
Albia said his ward is still overweight by four pounds to the 105-pound limit, but that poses no problem as they still have exactly a week to shed the extra poundage.
Since starting his preparations in September last year at the Ala gym in Cebu City, Nietes who earned the monicker ?Ahas? for making snakes his favorite pets, said he has so far logged 100 rounds of sparring and more than 400-kilometer roadwork.
The 27-year-old said he is no longer comfortable in the 105-pound division and will soon move to the flyweight or even bantamweight class.
(I am getting bigger. I may need to move to a heavier division, but before doing that, I want to unify the division so I will be the undisputed champion.)
Nietes first defended the title against Eddy Castro of Nicaragua whom he forced into submission in only two rounds. Two unanimous decision victories over Eric Ramirez and Manuel Vargas, both of Mexico, marked his reign as the world?s 105-pound kingpin.
