How far the ambitious three-year sports development program initiated by Imus (Cavite) Mayor Manny Maliksi has gone will be tested with the staging of the Mayor?s Cup Invitational Volleyball Championships Feb. 6 to 28 at the town Plaza open court.

The top three finishes in the NCAA volleyball tournament, champions in the Calabarzon and PRISAA as well as teams from the Air Force, Army and Navy have so far confirmed their intention to take part, making the tournament national in scope.

Imus Sports Council OIC Rommel Camerino said during yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session that the tournament will serve as testing ground of the three-sport development program of Mayor Maliksi that also included basketball and badminton.

?We started the comprehensive sports development program when Mayor Maliksi assumed office as the town executive. And this tournament we will be able to determine how far the ?Maliksing Atleta ng Imus? have gone as far as honing their skills is concerned,? Camerino said during the session, sponsored by ACCEL

?We will start with volleyball because among the three sporrts, including basketball and badminton, we saw that volleyball turned out to be the fastest to have improved,? Camerino explained. ?Dito natin makikita kung handa na ang ating mga atleta na pumalaot sa national level competitions.?

?We intend to field a team in the scheduled Manila Open so to test the water, we organized this Open Invitational for men and women,? Camerino said.

A total purse P28,000 will be at stake in each division with
the champion team getting P10,000, runner up P8,000, third P6,000 and fourth place P4,000.
An invitation was also sent to the UAAP but no confirmation has so far been received.
The National Volleyball Arbiters of the Association of the Philippines, headed by Philippine Volleyball Federation Region 4-A director Joey San Juan will handle the technical aspect of the event.
